"Coerces" is the wrong word. The GPL is often described as "restrictive"
compared to, say, the BSD license, but it's much more liberal than no
license at all, which is what you get with the vast majority of
copyrighted material.
The GPL sets conditions on what you can do with someone else's code.
There's nothing 'coercive' about that.
