I was under the impression that GIMP itself was part of the GNU project, making the debate moot.  Doesn't the G in GIMP stand for GNU?  Perhaps the preponderance of GNU-affiliated acronymed projects starting with the letter G (GNOME, GPG, etc.) is confusing me, but I've always associated GIMP with GNU...
