I realize it is a BSD license Actually it is not a BSD license, it is an X11 license. The BSD license has an obnoxious advertising clause which this license, fortunately, does not have. See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/bsd.html for more about this side issue. This license looks compatible with the GPL to me. So you can use the code with its current license.
