I know it's been around for quite a while, but if it wasn't submitted in the past would it make sense to add it? This license version is being recommended to the Board for approval at the next board meeting. Thank you for your submission. -- -- Josh Berkus OSI Board Member From josh at berkus.org Tue Jul 1 00:04:47 2025 From: josh at berkus.org (Josh Berkus) Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2025 17:04:47 -0700 Subject: [License-review] Legacy license suggestion: WordNet In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <87ad3d3f-8a3f-40c5-98bc-f0e43dc786e7@berkus.org> On 4/30/25 12:10, Warner, Brian (TS3K) via License-review wrote: > I'd like to suggest the inclusion of WordNet through the legacy license process. The license is similar to CMU, but also references databases. It pops up in various places as the WordNet project is over 20 years old and, quoting the Debian package manager, "is considered to be the most important resource available to researchers in computational linguistics, text analysis, and many related areas." This license is being recommended to the Board for approval at the next board meeting as a legacy license. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. -- Josh Berkus From josh.berkus at opensource.org Tue Jul 1 00:28:23 2025 From: josh.berkus at opensource.org (Josh Berkus) Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2025 17:28:23 -0700 Subject: [License-review] Current License Evaluation Status Message-ID: L-R, Here is the current status of recently submitted licenses: Recommended for Legacy Approval: WordNet License CDDL 1.1 Legacy Licenses in Discussion: BSD-3-Clause-Open-MPI Standard Licenses in Discussion: Better Attribution License Tiwaz License OSAI Licenses in Discussion: ModelGo Attribution-OpenSource License ModelGo Attribution License ModelGo Zero License Withdrawn: MGB 1.0 License -- -- Josh Berkus OSI Board Member From josh.berkus at opensource.org Tue Jul 1 00:33:29 2025 From: josh.berkus at opensource.org (Josh Berkus) Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2025 17:33:29 -0700 Subject: [License-review] The Better Attribution License. Suggestion: "The Licensed Materials do not include any datasets used for pretraining, training, adapting, or evaluating the Model, which may or may not be made available under a separate license." Reason: First, the phrase "for the avoidance of doubt" is awkward and not really necessary. Second, this rephrase makes it clear that this license takes no stance on the licensing of datasets, it's just stating that they are not included under this license. -- Josh Berkus
