David,

in this extension, as you call it, the original grid class "assumes a concrete
or permanent form" by being explicitly referenced, which based on Micro Star v.
FormGen, qualifies it as "derivative work."

Also, in Micro Star v. FormGen, the MAP files in question were useless without
the game itself. Still, they were defined by the court as "derivative work" and
it was decided that they infringed on the copyright of FormGen.
