Actually, software distribution in those days was by creating a duplicate of
a card deck and handing it to your fellow students. IBM owned the keypunch
equipment and nobody copyrighted software. 

 

Then the cost of distribution plummeted and lawyers started writing software
licenses.

 

But I date myself....
