I would agree with much that you say if history started in 1999. But  
it did not - Java's history started in the mid 90s and I would contend  
that the way Sun handled it back then, before open source had moved  
from the shadows to the main stage and when the monopolist had not yet  
been convicted, was the only way it could have succeeded.

Now, if history started in 2001, I would completely agree with your  
evaluation and would probably amplify it. The way Java was handled in  
the context of a 21st century world where open source is proven and  
prevalent was, at best, broken. And it's a long road back.

Maybe we should write that book together?
