It seems to me that the GPL is best suited for this kind of thing.
How you handle contributions for the "main" distribution has
nothing to do with the license, in my opinion. Just set separate
rules for that, just like the FSF does for the GNU project.
Yet another license should be avoided if at all possible.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Do you mean just to say "this
software was written by so-and-so"? That seems perfectly normal.
