It's also mildly amusing to note that lzh/lha is _proprietary_,
originated by Yooichi Tagawa.[1]

http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-lw-comp.html?dwzone=linux

(Almost amusing as this mailing list being run by the proprietary ezmlm
and qmail packages.)

[1]Even though Yooichi Tagawa, Haruhiko Okumura, and Hruyasu Yoshizaki's
cross-platform lzh/lha implementation is proprietary, it's been incorporated
blithely into other supposedly open-source utilities such as UnstuffIt
(http://www.natural-innovations.com/boo/macutil-readme.txt), by the sort
of folks who call it "freeware", e.g. http://www.bebits.com/app/937.
Nobody's thus far written an open-source implementation of the algorithm.

Not relevant to the preceding discussion, but I thought it was an
interesting case study.
