Which is the notional equivalent of demanding that the marginal notes you
make in a book you own constitute a modified work, and that you must send
a Xerox of the modified book to the author (or if you won't, marginal
notes are forbidden).  This is freedom?

That's difficult when distributing an operating system with its own
filesystem and tools.  You can boot the OS, but you can't see any text
on the screen....
