[FLOSS-Desktops] Hello from St. Paul to Floss Desktops Email Group

Hello!

My name is Stu Keroff, and I am the technology coordinator at Community
School of Excellence, a Hmong charter school in St. Paul, MN. Our student
population is overwhelmingly Southeast Asian, mostly Hmong (from Laos) with
a minority of students being Karenni (from Burma). Our students are either
refugees or children of refugees.

I am also the founder and director of the Asian Penguins, our school's
Linux users group. The Asian Penguins are the first and only (so far) Linux
club based in a Hmong school. The kids in the club learn to install,
configure, and use Linux and other open source software. Then they take
what they've learned to refurbish used computers, which are given to needy
families in our community. We have given away 107 computers in the club's
history. We have also provided our school with 120 Linux laptops for use in
grades 5-8.

I want to meet other teachers who are using Linux at school. Not only do I
want to learn from my peers, but I want my kids to get to know other kids
at other schools who are using Linux. I want them to see what other kids
are doing and to know that they are not alone. I also want to use tech to
give them  a chance to make friends who are not Asian.
